The J2X® MKIII : A Classic Reimagined for Today
The ‘Classic’ dilemma
Concourse after concourse testifies to the love affaire that automobile aficionados have with ‘Classic Cars’. From the 1920s to the 1970s, the offerings demonstrate both evolution of design and technological improvements. As attendees bear witness to often repeated affirmations from attendees that “Now THAT is a classic!” or “They don’t make them like that anymore!”.
So current auto design teams are challenged to come up with a compelling concept that will rank as a ‘classic’, a designation that is based on provenance, popular styling, aesthetics and prominence in films, performance events and media reviews. Cases in point are the Jaguar XKE, the Model T Ford, the Porsche 911T, the Aston Martin DB5, the Bugatti Type 35, to name but a few. But as we roll forward some six decades, designers continue to capitalize on the initial classic design by upgrading, in many iterations, with each generation offering a new driving experience. But through this process, what becomes of the ‘classic’ that was the cornerstone of the phenomenon?
At Allard Motor Works (AMW), we made the decision early on to maintain the original body design of the 1951-54 Allard J2X. We also recognized that product differentiation in today’s modern market was an added value. The homogenized designs that are prevalent in our showrooms elicit in many classic car lovers a counter reaction to what is offered. We also recognized that we were facing the daunting task of regulation, bureaucracy and even consumer scepticism as to how we could integrate a 70 plus year old design into today’s market.
AMW took this challenge head on. Relying heavily on the ‘classic’ niche market response and the expertise and the creativity of our team. What we heard from the marketplace was a strong desire to keep the body style as the original, BUT to extricate everything that would compromise safety, reliability, comfort and performance. The outcome is a ‘modern classic’ that is carefully designed to meet the highest levels of conformity to today’s expectations of a unique and exclusive vehicle, but without all of the failings of the original.
From structural and safety enhancements to functionality and creature comforts, AMW’s design team met the challenge. Working in a technologically sophisticated environment where CAD, Virtual Reality (VR), 3D printers and 5-axis routers are now the tools of the trade. The outcome is a ‘modern classic’ that meets the norms of the US National Highway Traffic Safety Agency as a low-volume replica manufacturer, and also provides owners with a high level of reliability, safety and comfort.
AMW continues to improve the ownership experience with the design and introduction of new features. Among these are the Kevlar lined fuel cell, large 6-piston disc brakes, cockpit heater, fully adjustable bucket seats, a large trunk, tilt steering, larger windscreens, power steering, a composite spare tire cover and quality leather luggage embossed with the J2X’s 17-digit VIN. A Targa styled hardtop is currently in design and will fit with past, current and future roadsters.
So rather than denature a classic 70-year-old icon, AMW now provide classic car lovers with a truly modern roadster that will provide lasting driving enjoyment for generations to come.
